Jailtime.org: Virtual filesystems for Xen

This site provides a variety of downloads and howto’s to facilitate use of the Xen Virtual Machine Monitor. Xen allows you to run multiple operating systems on a single piece of physical hardware. Here you will find Linux distributions that can run as Xen guests out of the box, obviating the need to create your own custom filesystems. The filesystems on this site have already been tweaked to deal with Xen’s idiosyncracies, and are also designed to be lightweight and minimally divergent from the original distribution.

The Fedora Core 6 image has been brought up to date with yum. Speaking of FC6, most of the error reports we get come from people running the xen kernels bundled with FC6. Evidently many (most?) people running FC6 as their dom0 have a problem running the jailtime images out of the box. In an effort to mitigate this problem the new FC6 image has some workarounds that you can try if you are having problems running the image. There are further details on the download page

Dec 29th, 2006

The Fedora Core 6 image has been re-revved. The tarball now contains config files for Xen 2 and 3. All packages have been brought up to date and the glibc tls issue has been resolved by telling the linker to use the nosegneg libraries (see Tweaks).

At this point all images on this site have been tested under Xen 2 and 3 and now include config files for both versions. With the recent glibc changes in the gentoo and fedora images all of the images are now free of any costly memory emulation.

Dec 20th, 2006

Uploaded a new Slackware 11 image. This is the first step in re-revving all of the images such that they will run equally well under Xen 2 and 3. In the case of the Slack image this did not require any changes, however recent security fixes have been pulled in and a Xen 3 config file has been added to the tarball.

Update (Dec 21st): Debian 3.1 has been re-revved as well. The rest of the updated images will be under the Christmas tree hopefully.

Update (Dec 24th): CentOS 4.4 is done.

Update (Dec 28th): Gentoo 2006.1 has been re-revved. Unlike the last gentoo image, this one has had glibc recompiled to deal with the tls issue.

Nov 14th, 2006

A jailtime visitor reported a problem with the pam package in the recently uploaded fc6 image. If you are using this image please reinstall pam-0.99.6.2-3.fc6.i386.rpm. Download the rpm from one of the fc6 repositories and run: rpm –force -i pam-0.99.6.2-3.fc6.i386.rpm

A new fc6 image has been uploaded with this fix and also incorporates updates from the fedora team since the initial release two weeks ago. The new image has been compressed with bzip2 instead of the usual gzip in an effort to cut down on bandwidth consumption.

Nov 14th, 2005

The Gentoo 2005.0 image has been upgraded to 2005.1. Actually, the previous image was a hybrid 2005.1 with some masked packages from 2005.0 (glibc and base-layout). It appears the latest versions of these two packages are finally Xen compatible out of the box. This means that Gentoo 2005.1 can run as a Xen guest with virtually no tweaks – good work Gentoo people!

Oct 17th, 2005

CentOS 4.2 was released last week. You can get the updated image here: CentOS 4.2. The old version is still available.
